Looked it up for you. Apparently they're the 'cut' version of speed bumps (3 smaller bumps across,not full). Wide enough for slowing cars/trucks with a regular wheel base, but narrow enough that wider based vehicles like ambulances and firetrucks don't hit them and are unimpeded!
